Looks idyllic. It's great that you guys have a crew out there to enjoy those things with -- that's not to be taken for granted.
One of my friends here talks about how her parents had a core group of three or four couples when she was growing up, all best friends. They had kids around the same time who grew up together...the families shared their vacations, celebrated all the birthdays and holidays, and grieved with each other through hard times. They're still best friends after 30+ years.
We lived in Kelowna for eight years and made some friends, but not folks we hung out with all the time. We clung more to our old friendships, perhaps because the alternative seemed too difficult. Grown-up friendships are also different than teenage/early 20s friendships, and it's harder to build those connections in cities, I think.
We sometimes talk about how our small-town upbringing and connections has skewed our expectations of relationships, because we had that easy, built-in base of friends. I had assumed that we'd never be able to make new ones; that we'd watch our old friendships dwindling over time and distance and never replace the lost ones, but we've been experiencing a bit of a social renaissance in our new "adopted" small town.
We've only been in Summerland for a year and a half but we're finding our core group forming now, people we see every week to share food, laugh and get the kids together...as I write that, I'm thinking "so what? everyone probably has that." ...but I'm seeing how important it is to feel connected to the people and places in a community. For transplants like us who always assumed in some vague way that we'd raise kids with our old Manitoba friends, it's a weird transition.
Anyway, sorry to babble on.
